Exploring Gaming Trends Ahead of CES 2024

With CES 2024 looming on the horizon, Retail Technology Insider is delving into the top trends and stories shaping the consumer electronics industry. Among these, the evolution of video games stands out as a captivating narrative that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Over the past fifty years, video games have undergone a remarkable transformation. From rudimentary challenges on the Atari to visually stunning, lifelike experiences on consoles like the Xbox series X and PlayStation 5, the industry has witnessed unprecedented growth. Notably, the advent of fully immersive virtual reality (VR) technology has brought to life the futuristic visions depicted in science fiction. Today, gaming is so accessible and widespread that people can indulge in advanced gameplay experiences right on their smartphones.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) reports that 73 percent of the U.S. population aged 13 to 64 engage in video gaming for at least an hour daily across mobile, PC, and console platforms in 2022. This represents a three percent increase since 2019, translating to a staggering nine million new gamers within just three years.

CES has long served as a platform for video game giants to unveil their latest hardware, peripherals, and platforms. Companies like Atari, Nintendo, Microsoft Xbox, and Oculus Rift have utilized CES as a launchpad for their innovations, drawing the attention of industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.

At CES 2023, more than 9,000 attendees listed Gaming and Esports as one of their primary interests, with 63 percent of these being senior-level executives seeking to identify emerging trends in gaming.

Looking ahead to CES 2024, the CTA's study, "The Future of Gaming: 2022," offers insights into the gaming trends and technologies expected to take center stage. Here are four key trends:

1. **Gamers' Purchasing Behavior:** Nearly three-quarters of gamers have made a gaming purchase in the past six months, indicating a robust market for new titles across all gaming platforms.

2. **Social Gaming:** Gamers are increasingly seeking social interactions through gaming experiences, driving demand for multiplayer and online gaming.

3. **Metaverse and Immersive Experiences:** Despite a slight decrease in excitement since 2019, gamers are still eager for immersive experiences enabled by augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and metaverse technologies.

4. **Innovative Gaming Equipment:** Companies like Razer are poised to unveil cutting-edge gaming equipment designed to deliver deeply engaging experiences, catering to the evolving demands of hardcore gamers.

As CES 2024 approaches, anticipation mounts for the unveiling of groundbreaking innovations that will shape the future of gaming.
